ST. LOUIS – Lewis University's women's soccer team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end as Maryville rallied for a 3-2 overtime win at the Maryville Soccer Field on Friday (Oct. 29) afternoon in St. Louis. The Flyers drop to 9-4-2, 8-4-2 GLVC while the Saints improve to 6-8-1, 5-7-1 GLVC.
Both sides had chances early in the contest but neither was able to get on the scoreboard until the 27th minute.
Alex Dennis (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) played a ball ahead to
Faith Lewis (Corunna, Ind./DeKalb) who flicked it on to
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South). Havelka-Vanderplow split the defenders, made a move around the keeper and scored into the open goal for the first goal of the contest.
Lewis had a 10-3 advantage in shots, 5-2 in shots on goal and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
The Flyers continued to press for a second goal and were rewarded in the 61st minute.
Cameron Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) dribbled into the box from the left wing and crossed the ball to Havelka-Vanderplow who scored from about 15 yards out for her second goal of the game and her team leading seventh goal of the season.
Maryville cut Lewis' lead in half in the 69th minute when Amanda Kaltwasser scored in the box with assists from Madison Canoy and Molly Krispin.
The Saints tied the game with 0:27 left as Gentry scored directly off a corner kick over the hand of Clark into the right-side netting.
Maryville scored the game-winner 2:53 into overtime. The Saints had a corner kick and the ball was punched out by Clark. Sammi Fulson got to the loose ball, dribbled to the top of the box and fired a shot into the upper right corner.
The Flyers finished the contest with a 15-11 edge in shots including 8-6 in shots on goal. Maryville had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Havelka-Vanderplow led Lewis with eight shots in the contest while Sengstock added three. Clark made three saves in goal.
The Flyers look to bounce back on Sunday as it takes on Missouri S&T in the regular season finale at noon in Rolla, Mo.
