DEKALB, Ill. – Lewis University's women's tennis team wrapped up its fall schedule at the Northern Illinois Huskie Indoor Invitational this weekend in Dekalb, Ill.
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) finished fourth in the Flight 2 Singles competition. She defeated South Dakota's Sonia Skobkareva 3-6, 7-5 10-7 in her opening match on Friday and then fell to Air Force's Hailey Stelse 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinal round. Smith was defeated by Air Force's Alexandra Kuo 7-6, 6-2 in the third-place match on Sunday morning.
The Flyers had three women competing in the Flight 4 Singles Draw. Julia Huette won her opening match against Northern Illinois' Gabriella Kaminski 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 on Friday evening and then was defeated by Air Force's Isabella Flodin 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. She fell in the third-place match to Air Force's Andrea Le 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday morning.
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) finished the weekend 2-1. She lost her first-round match against Northern Illinois' Angelica Ross 6-3, 6-1 on Friday evening and then bounced back to win her next two. Sueflohn defeated Chicago State's Danina Hughes 6-2, 6-0 on Saturday afternoon and then defeated her Lewis teammate
Sarah Markun (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation final.
Markun lost her first match to Flodin 6-0, 6-0 on Friday evening, then rallied to defeat Kaminski in three sets by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 on Saturday before falling to Sueflohn in the consolation final on Sunday morning.
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) went 1-2 in the Flight Three Singles Draw. She dropped her opening round match to Air Force's Alexis Odom 6-1, 6-2 on Friday and was defeated by Northern Illinois' Iuliia Dmitrieva 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 on Saturday afternoon. Hills won the seventh-place match against Chicago State's Susana Andres in three sets by scores of 0-6, 7-6 (7-2) and 10-8.
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) took sixth in the Flight 1 Singles Draw. She dropped her opening match to Air Force's Sydney Fitch in three sets 7-5, 2-6, 7-10 and then she won her consolation semifinal match by default over South Dakota's Aly Habiba who had to withdraw due to injury. Salenko was defeated in the fifth-place match by South Dakota's Jana Lazarevic 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday morning. Salenko played Chicago State's Katarina Dukic in an extra-match and won in three sets by scores of 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 and 10-7.
In doubles action, Smith and Salenko lost their opening round match to Stelse and Kuo 6-4 then defeated South Dakota's Natalie Kmoskova and Beata Havlickova 7-6 in a tiebreak but lost to Flodin and Fitch in the fifth-place match 6-2.
In Flight Two doubles competition, Sueflohn and Hills fell to Air Force's Karina Chao and Vivian Glozman 6-1 in their first match, then defeated Northern Illinois' team of Kaminski and Christy Robinson 6-4 in the consolation semis and then fell to Ross and Josefina Trella in the fifth-place match 7-6 (7-5).
Lewis returns to the courts on Friday (Feb. 4) when it opens its Spring schedule against St. Thomas (Minn.) at 6 p.m. in Homewood, Ill.
