SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Lewis University's 13th ranked women's volleyball team had its eight-match winning streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to Drury at the O'Reilly Family Events Center in Springfield, Mo., on Friday evening. The Flyers drop to 13-4, 8-1 GLVC while the Panthers improve to 11-6, 4-4 GLVC.
Lewis used an 11-4 run in the opening set to extend its lead from 6-5 to 17-9 on its way to a 25-12 victory. The Flyers recorded 16 kills in the stanza and hit .308 while holding Drury to just eight kills and a .081 attack percentage.
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) and
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) had four kills apiece to lead Lewis while
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) added three more.
The Panthers led by as many as 10 points at 20-10 in set two after back-to-back errors by Schlechte and Van Loo. The Flyers made it interesting running off six straight to close within four to force Drury to call a timeout. Out of the break the Panthers were able to close it out by scoring five of the final seven points to win 25-18 and even the match at a set apiece.
The middle frame saw seven ties and three lead changes. It was tied at 12 when Lewis took control scoring five of six points to build a 17-13 lead on a kill from Van Loo. Drury cut the deficit to three but wouldn't get any closer as the Flyers finished the set strong with an 8-3 run to win 25-17.
Lewis led by as many as four in the fourth set and were the first to 20 as it lead 21-19 after a kill from
Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic). The Panthers responded with a 5-1 run of its own to get to set point at 24-22. The Flyers fought off two set points as Schlechte recorded a kill and then a bad set by Chloe Rear evened the set up.
Drury regained the advantage on a kill by Taylor Forth but another kill from Van Loo evened things at 25. The Panthers scored the final two points of the set to win 27-25 to force a deciding fifth set.
Lewis led 7-5 in the final set before Drury went on a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead and forced the Flyers to take its first timeout of the set. Lewis responded getting a kill from Ray and a service ace from
Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) to pull within 10-9 and forced the Panthers to take a timeout. That would be the closest the Flyers got as Drury scored the final five points of the match to win 15-9.
Van Loo matched her career-high with 21 kills while Schlechte added 15 kills and Venema finished with eight kills. Stenman had 53 assists and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) added 19 digs. Lewis hit .247 for the contest recording 66 kills against 21 errors in 182 chances.
Forth led the Panthers with 19 kills and was joined in double figures by Gabriela Oliveria with 12 kills. Rear had 44 assists while Juliana Squire finished with a match-high 29 digs. Drury hit .220 in the match with 58 kills against 18 errors in 182 swings.
The Flyers look to bounce back on Saturday as they travel to Rolla, Mo., to take on Missouri S&T at 3 p.m.
