WHITEWATER, Wis. – Lewis University's Anastasyia Salenko finished as the runner-up in the No. 1 Singles Draw at the Whitewater Warhawk Fall Invite on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 8-9).
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) finished fourth in the No. 1 Singles Draw.
Salenko went 2-1 in the event. She defeated Chicago State's Kissmel Cedano in her opening match 6-0, 6-1 and then defeated Northern Illinois' Reagan Welch 6-0, 6-0 to advance to Saturday's final against Northern Illinois' Diana Lukyanova. In the final, Lukyanova defeated Salenko 6-2, 6-0.
Zafeiri opened tournament play with a straight sets win over Carleton's Amelia Asfaw 6-3, 7-6 (7-6) to advance to the semifinals where she was defeated by Lukyanova 6-2, 6-3. In the third-place match she lost to Welch 6-3, 6-3.
In the No. 2 singles draw,
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) was the number two seed and won the draw going 3-0. Smith opened play on Friday with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Chicago State's Sami Maaroufi and then defeated Northern Illinois' Iuliia Dmitieva 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals to advance to Saturday's championship against Erika Dimitriev. Smith dropped the opening set in a tiebreak on Saturday but came back to win the final two sets to win the title 6-7 (6-7), 6-4, 11-9.
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) also took part in the No. 2 singles draw and took third in the event with a record of 2-1. She defeated Carleton's Mariam Nechiporuk 5-7, 6-3, 12-10 in her first match before losing to Dimitriev 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. She bounced in the third-place match with a 7-6 (7-6), 4-6, 10-6 win over Dmitieva.
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) took fifth and sixth respectively in the No. 3 Singles draw. Hills lost to Anastaisa Rakita (NIU) in her first match 6-0, 6-3 before winning her final two. She defeated Amanda Black (Carleton) 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation semifinals and then defeated Reisch in the consolation final.
Reisch lost to Gianna Nikoleit (UWW) 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 3-10 in her first match then defeated NIU's Femanda Naves by walkover.
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) took fifth in the No. 4 singles draw going 2-1. She dropped her first match to UWW's Olivia Kraft 3-6, 4-6 but won her final two matches over Chicago State's Marta Garcia 6-0, 6-0 and Roosevelt's Maria Rivas 6-0, 6-3.
Sophie Davis (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) went 1-2 in the No. 5 Singles Draw. She lost her first match to Carleton's Ingrid Smith 3-6, 2-6 and then lost to Courtney Day (UWW) 4-6, 2-6 but defeated St. Francis' Kiana Kikich 6-2, 6-2 in the seventh-place match.
Agnes Florczyk (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) finished fourth in the No. 7 Singles Draw with a record of 1-2. She defeated St. Francis' Grace Monahan 6-3, 6-3 in her opening match but lost to Carleton's Taylor Thulson 6-2, 6-3 in the semis and lost to Chicago State's Ricarda Spartmann in the third-place match.
Julia Huette finished third in the No. 8 Singles Draw with a 2-1 record. She defeated Michelle Robert (USF) 6-1, 6-1, then lost to UWW's MacKenzie Lindow 4-6, 2-6 and then beat Roosevelt's Ava Collins 6-2, 6-2 in the third-place contest.
Smith and Zafeiri finished third in the No. 1 Doubles Draw with a record of 2-1 while Salenko and Reisch took fifth with a mark of 2-1. Sueflohn and Hills finished seventh in the No. 2 Doubles Draw with a mark of 1-2 while Davis and Vujanic won the No. 3 Doubles draw with a record of 3-0. Huette and Florczyk took fourth in the No. 4 Doubles Draw with a record of 1-2.
The Flyers wrap-up their fall schedule at the Northern Illinois Women's Invite (Oct. 29-31) in DeKalb, Ill.
