MENTOR, Oh. - The No. 7 seed Lewis University men's soccer team picked up its first NCAA Tournament win since 2013 with a 2-0 win over No. 10 seed Davenport Thursday (Nov. 18) in a NCAA Division II first round game at Mentor High School. The Flyers advance to take on No. 2 seed Lake Erie Saturday at 5 p.m. (CST).
The Flyers (12-4-3) scored two goals in the span of 1:26 of the first half to take control of the game.
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) got the Flyers on the board first with a goal at the 17:42 mark of the first half on a breakaway.
Lewis then scored at the 19:08 mark as
Matt Budreck (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) headed home a corner kick from the top of the penalty area off the keeper's hand and under the bar to make it 2-0.
The Flyers continued to attack after the second goal as
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) had a shot on goal that was saved at the 24:19 mark.
Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) tallied two shots and the Flyers had three more corner kicks the remainder of the half.
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) came out firing right away in the second half with a pair of shots in the first four minutes of the second half. Later in the half he added a third shot that went wide.
The Flyers tallied 18 shots for the game with eight shots on goal and five corner kicks, while Davenport (11-8-1) totaled six shots, none on goal with five corners.
Beaulieu had four shots, while Oluwatuyi tallied three shots to pace the Flyers. Baumann, Budreck and Mwanga had two shots on goal each for Lewis.
