ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime to Drury 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Men's Soccer Tournament at Lewis Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers fall to 11-4-3 while the Panthers improve to 8-6-4.
Lewis, seeded fourth, dominated play in the first 45 minutes recording seven shots including three on goal but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities as Yannick Lamers made three saves to keep the game scoreless at half.
The Flyers had the game's first good scoring chance in the ninth minute when
Aris Oluwatuyi's (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) shot from the top of the penalty area hit off the crossbar.
Lewis appeared to score two minutes later but the goal was waved off due to offsides on the play.
The Flyers had another chance in the 14th minutes as
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) tried to head in a corner kick but Lamers was there to make the save.
Drury's, seeded fifth, first scoring chance came in the 23rd minute on a shot from Adem Hamdaoua that was saved by
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg).
Oluwatuyi had another chance in the 33rd minute but his shot from the right wing hit off the outside of the left post and stayed out.
Baumann had a second chance in the 37th minute as he sent a laser towards the left post but Lamers was there to deflect the ball out for a corner kick.
Lewis appeared to score again in the 39th minute but once again the goal was waved off due to offsides.
The Flyers had the wind in the second half and primarily held the ball on the Panthers end and outshot Drury 7-0 in the stanza but were able to put just one of those chances on goal.
Neither side took a shot in the first overtime and there wasn't a shot attempted in the second overtime until the 108th minute when Trevor Cairns intercepted a pass near midfield and played it ahead to Jamie O'Brien who got behind the Lewis defense and shot it from the right wing. His shot glanced off the inside of the left post and bounced in for the game-winning goal.
The Flyers outshot the Panthers 14-4 for the contest and 4-2 in shots on goal. Lewis had eight corner kicks to three for Drury. Baumann led the Flyers with six shots while Oluwatuyi added three and
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) finished with two.
The Flyers will now wait until Monday (Nov. 15) when they'll find out if they'll receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
