KENOSHA, Wis. – Lewis University's men's tennis team opened its 2021 season with a 5-2 at Carthage on Friday (Feb. 12) afternoon at the Life Sport Athletic Club in Kenosha, Wis. The win is the first at Lewis for new head coach
Raquel Vescovi.
The Flyers won two of the three matches in the doubles competition to take the first point of the match.
Pedja Trifunovic (Aleksandrovac, Serbia/) and
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/) won the first doubles match with an 8-0 victory over Nicolas Welker and Tripp Schulte at No. 2 doubles. Carthage's duo of Patrick Anderson and John Nykyforuk defeated Lewis'
Daniel Sowa (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) and
Earl Lim (/) 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. The Flyers top doubles team of
Juan Martin Ramirez Mejia (Medellin, Colombia) and
David Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia/) defeated Matt Krzewinski and Andre Antreassian at No. 1 doubles 8-3.
In the singles competition, Lewis won four of the six contests. Ambrozic started it off with a straight sets win over Krzewinski 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Lusti followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Welker at No. 2 singles, Trifunovic defeated Antreassian 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Ramirez Mejia knocked off Schulte 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to win the match. Carthage picked up wins in the fifth and sixth singles duals with Friese defeating Sowa 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Nykyforuk beating
Jeremy Charles (Grenada/Cedar International School) 6-3, 6-1 in the final contest of the match.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 27) hosting Walsh University at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill., at 7 p.m.
