MANKATO, Minn. – After being held to three hits in Friday's season opening doubleheader Lewis' bats erupted for 26 in a doubleheader sweep of Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday at the Maverick Sport Dome in Mankato, Minn. The Flyers improve to 2-2 on the season while the Golden Bears fall to 1-3.
Game 1 – Lewis 13 Concordia-St. Paul 5 6 innings
Lewis scored twice in the first inning on two hits and capitalized on an error.
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led off the inning with a single and scored on a throwing error by Bryanna Olson on a sacrifice bunt attempt off the bat of
Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic). Bukovsky ended up at third and scored on
Kristin Kavalauskas' (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher.
The Golden Bears cut the Flyer lead in half in the third as Clara Heislen hit a solo home run to left center with two out in the frame.
Lewis came right back with three in its half of the third getting an RBI single from
Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) and a two-run single from
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee).
CSP scored twice in the fourth getting RBI singles from Taylor Griffin and Ani Bell to make it a 5-3 contest.
Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) gave the Flyers an 8-3 lead in the home half of the fourth lining a three-run shot down the left field line for her first roundtripper of the season.
The Golden Bears scored twice in the fifth and brought the tying run to the plate but David, pitching in relief of
Braylyn Burdick (Boonville, Ind./Boonville), struck out the next three hitters to escape the jam.
Lewis put the game away scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth. Serena drove in the first run with a bases loaded single to second that plated Swartzentruber.
Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) followed with a single to center scoring David,
Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) drove in Serena and
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) with a single up the middle. Kavalauskas drove in the final run with a single to right center to bring in Magaldi.
The Flyers pounded out 13 hits in the contest and were led by David who went 4-for-4 at the dish. Kavalauskas, Serena and Magaldi had two hits apiece. Swartzentruber and Serena combined for six RBI in the contest.
Anna Gustafson (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) got the start for Lewis allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Burdick got the final two outs in the fourth and then faced three batters in the fifth. David went the final two innings retiring six of the seven hitters she faced to even her record at 1-1.
Game 2 Lewis 13 Concordia-St. Paul 4 5 innings
The Golden Bears struck first with a run in the opening inning. With two on and two out Aryka Knoche singled up the middle to drive in Kris McIntyre. CSP added to its lead in the second on Hanna Mortenson's one out homer to center.
Lewis tied the game in the top of the third on Swartzentruber's two-out, two-run single down the left field scoring Anderson and Taylor.
The Flyers took the lead in the fourth sending nine batters to the plate scoring five runs on five hits. Taylor put Lewis ahead with a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Magaldi. Bukovsky followed with a single to bring in Anderson to make it 4-2. Kavalauskas brought home Taylor with a groundout to short. Swartzentruber and David capped the scoring hitting back-to-back doubles.
The Golden Bears scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double with the bases loaded off the bat of Heislen to make it a 7-4 game.
The Flyers put up a six spot in the fifth inning which was highlighted by Kavalauskas' three-run homer to center.
Lewis finished with 13 hits in the contest with four players recording at least two hits. Swartzentruber led the charge going 3-for-3 while Taylor, Bukovsky and Kavalauskas had two hits apiece. The top four in the Flyer lineup combined to go 9-for-14 with nine RBI and seven runs scored.
David picked up the victory allowing four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) pitched the fifth inning allowing two walks.
The Flyers are back in action on Thursday (Feb. 18) taking on Upper Iowa at 1:30 pm and Ursuline College at 3:30 p.m. at the Lewis Softball Dome Invitational at The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill.
