ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team took both games on the first day of the Lewis Dome Invitational on Thursday afternoon at The Dome At the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Des Plaines, Ill. The Flyers defeated Upper Iowa 8-0 in five innings in the opener and then rallied to win the second game 7-3 over Ursuline.
Game 1 – Lewis 8 Upper Iowa 0 Five Innings
Lewis (4-2) scored in all five innings in the game against Upper Iowa. Its first two runs of the game came in the first. With one out
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) doubled to right center and Kristin Kavaulauskas was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Lofthouse scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch and Kavaulauskas scored on an error by the third baseman.
The Flyers added to their lead in the second inning as
Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) led off the inning with a single to short and advanced to third on
Olivia Magaldi's (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) ground-rule double to left. Calderon scored as
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was thrown out at first after a strikeout.
Lewis added two more in the third on Calderon's two run single up the middle scoring
Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) and
Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic). The Flyers extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth when Kavaulauskas drove home Taylor with a sacrifice fly to center.
Lewis put the game away with two its final two runs in the fifth. Calderon drove in her third run of the contest with a ground-rule double to left to score
Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) and
Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) scored on a throwing error by the catcher to end the contest.
The Flyers outhit the Peacocks (0-1) in the contest 10-4 and were led by Calderon with three hits while Taylor, Lofthouse, Kavaulauskas, David, Anderson, Powell and Magaldi all had a hit.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) tossed a complete game four hit shutout while striking out five to even her record at 1-1.
Game 2 – Lewis 7 Ursuline 3
Lewis fell behind in game two in the third inning on Ursuline's (0-5) Kiley Gallagher's two-run homer to center with one out in the frame. The Arrows added to their lead in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to center of the bat of Maddie Fields which scored Jovanna Herrera.
The Flyers were held to just two hits through four innings but heated up in the fifth as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored all seven of their runs on three hits and three Ursuline errors.
Taylor drove in the first run of the inning on a fielder's choice to right that scored Anderson as Magaldi was retired at second on the play. Lofthouse followed with a single to center that scored
Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, IL/Providence Catholic High School) and allowed Taylor to reach third on an error by the center fielder. Taylor scored the tying run on an error by the third baseman which allowed Kavalauskas to reach.
Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) put Lewis in front with a single to left center to bring home Lofthouse. David was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Calderon drew a walk to bring home Kavalauskas. Anderson capped the inning singling just inside the bag at third down the left field line to drive in Swartzentruber and David.
That would be all the run support that
Anna Gustafson (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) needed as she retired six of the final seven hitters she faced to pick up the complete game victory and earn her first win of the season. She allowed three runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks in the contest.
The Flyers were held to five hits in the contest with Lofthouse, Kavalauskas, Swartzentruber, Anderson and Magaldi each picking up a hit.
Lewis is back in action at The Dome At The Parkway Bank Sports Complex on Friday afternoon hosting Hillsdale at 3:30 p.m.
