BOLIVAR, Mo. – Lewis University's women's basketball team cruised to an 85-60 win over Southwest Baptist on Thursday evening at the Meyer Wellness Center in Bolivar, Mo. The Flyers led wire-to-wire in the contest and had four players reach double figures in scoring in the contest.
Lewis (11-7, 11-7 GLVC) recorded season-highs in three-point field goals made with 13 and three-point field goal percentage as it connected on 56.5 percent (13-for-23) of its attempts.
The Flyers scored the first five points of the contest and never looked back. The Bearcats (4-12, 4-12 GLVC) clawed to within 7-6 thanks to a 6-2 run but Lewis answered right back with seven straight points to extend its lead to 14-6 on a jumper in the paint from
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West).
SBU made things interesting thanks to a 10-3 run to pull within a point at 17-16 with less two minutes to play in the opening stanza but the Flyers closed the quarter strong scoring the final seven points to take an eight-point advantage into the second quarter.
The Bearcats scored the first four points of the second frame to cut Lewis' advantage to 24-20 but the Flyers pulled away thanks to a 17-1 run over a span of 4:08 to extend its lead to 20 points and went into the locker room at the half with a 51-30 lead.
The two sides traded baskets for the first nine minutes of third quarter before Lewis got back-to-back three's from
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and two free throws from
Jenna Badali (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) to extend its lead to 29 points heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Flyers stretched their lead to as much as 30 points in the final session before SBU scored the final five points of the game for the final margin.
Badali finished with a game-high 19 points and was joined in double figures by Williams with 18 points while
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) and Gugliuzza added 11 and 10 points respectively. Lewis finished the game shooting 56 percent (29-for-52) from the floor and was 14-of-22 at the foul line. It outrebounded the Bearcats 28-23 and forced 22 turnovers in the contest.
SBU finished the game shooting 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the field but connected on only 5 of its 16 attempts from three and shot 65 percent at the charity stripe. Regan Tibbits led the Bearcats with 14 points while Brylee Graddy and Nyah Pettus added 13 and 11 points off the bench respectively.
The Flyers play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday as they travel down to Springfield, Mo., to take on fourth ranked Drury at 1 p.m.
