Flyers Defeat Davenport 14-8 In Home Opener

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team opened the home portion of its 2021 schedule defeating Davenport 14-8 on Saturday afternoon at Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Ill. The Flyers improve to 2-1 overall and in the GLVC while the Panthers drop to 0-3 overall and in the conference.

Lewis scored less than a minute into the contest as Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored an unassisted goal. Davenport tied the contest at the 10:37 mark when Jordan Caskenette scored with an assist from Andy Trapp.

The Flyers scored three goals in the final six minutes of the quarter to regain the lead. Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) scored his first of five goals in the contest at the 5:43 mark of the opening stanza. Dalep scored again 2:08 later with an assist from Daigle. Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) capped the scoring in the first 15 minutes as he found the back of the net with three seconds left in the quarter.

Lewis scored the first two goals of the second stanza to extend its lead to five as Hunter Loprino (Woodstock, Ill./St. Viator) scored the first of his two goals at the 12:46 mark and Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) followed it up with a goal less than 0:30 later.

Davenport scored twice in the span of 68 seconds to cut the Flyer lead in half. Caskenette scored his second of the contest and Austin Thompson added the second goal.

The two sides swapped goals as Dalep scored at the 7:19 mark for his third of the contest while Thompson scored three minutes later for his second tally of the afternoon.

Lewis scored twice in the final two minutes of the half to take a 9-4 lead into the locker room at halftime. Loprino scored his second of the afternoon and Kai George (New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada/New Westminster Secondary School) scored with 0:11 remaining.

The Panthers cut the Flyer lead to four with a man up goal 93 seconds into the third period as Stephen Ochsenkehl scored from Caskenette. Lewis scored the next two goals with Daigle scoring at 11:30 and Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) scored at the 10:18 mark to give the Flyers an 11-5 lead.

Davenport scored the final two goals of the quarter with Caskenette scoring at 8:31 and Thompson scored at the 4:22 mark to cut the lead to 11-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.

The Panthers continued to cut into the lead scoring their third man up goal with less than six minutes to go as Adam Smellie scored an unassisted goal. Dalep scored his final two goals of the contest less than a minute apart and Andre added the clincher scoring an unassisted goal with 2:33 remaining.

Lewis outshot Davenport 45-24 in the contest and had 30 shots on goal. It was 23-for-26 from the faceoff circle and picked up 52 ground balls as a team. Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) won 23 faceoffs and had 18 ground ball pickups while Drew Dingle (Verona, Wis./Verona) and Zack Merwin (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) had two caused turnovers. Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) made 12 saves in goal for the Flyers.

Caskenette and Thompson led the Panthers with three goals apiece. Kaden Seelye caused four turnovers and Daniel Milano made 16 saves and picked up 10 ground balls.

Lewis is back at home on Saturday (Feb. 27) as it takes on No. 17 Rockhurst at 11 a.m. at Lewis Stadium.
