ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's second ranked women's volleyball team swept seventh ranked Missouri-St. Louis in a top 10 contest at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers improve to 5-0 overall and in the GLVC while the Tritons drop to 3-1 overall and in the conference.
Lewis led wire-to-wire in the opening set as it raced out to a six-point lead midway through the set and never saw its lead dip below three points. UMSL got to within 15-12 after back-to-back kills from Charlotte Richards but the Flyers answered outscoring the Tritons 10-5 over the remainder of the set to take the opener 25-17.
Lewis used a 9-3 run midway through the middle set to take control and would go onto win the stanza 25-11. The Flyers had a hitting percentage of .262 in the frame recording 12 kills against one error in 42 chances.
Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) had five kills in the set while
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) added three kills. Lewis' defense held UMSL to a negative .154 attack percentage and had five blocks in the set.
The Tritons led by three early in the third frame, but the Flyers came back to take an 11-9 lead on a kill from Greening. UMSL tied the game at 11 when Kaileen Herman and Karli Dean blocked
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg). Lewis then went on a 6-2 run to build a 17-13 lead on a kill from Schlechte. The Tritons cut the deficit to one as Richards had three kills in that span, but the Flyers were able to close it out scoring four of the final six points to win the set 25-22 on a kill from Greening.
Lewis finished the match with .317 hitting percentage recording 46 kills against seven errors in 123 chances. Greening led the way with 11 kills while
Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West) added nine kills and Stefanon finished with eight kills.
Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had 19 assists and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) finished with a match-high 21 digs.
UMSL was held to .052 attack percentage in the match recording 26 kills against 20 errors in 115 swings. Richards matched Greening with 11 kills while Alexa Rang finished with seven kills. Herman had 20 assists and Megan Woll finished with 19 digs.
The Flyers are back in action on Sunday (Feb. 28) as they travel to Kirksville, Mo., for a triangular match against Truman State and Drury beginning at 10 a.m.
