ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's second ranked women's volleyball team swept both of its matches at the Truman Triangular on Sunday at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Mo. The Flyers began the day with a straight sets win over Truman State and then came back in the afternoon to sweep No. 16 Drury.
Lewis (7-0, 7-0 GLVC) opened the match scoring the first four points but the Bulldogs (3-4, 3-4 GLVC) answered with a 5-1 run to even the set on a block from Ainsley Heise and Rachel DeFries.
The Flyers responded with an 11-4 run to seize control of the set and wouldn't look back on its way to a 25-17 victory.
Lewis led by as many as eight points midway through the second stanza but Truman made a late run to cut the margin to 18-15 after a kill from Sam Yancy. The Flyers finished strong scoring seven of the final nine points to win the frame 25-17 on a block by
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg).
Lewis used a 10-4 run early in the third set to break a 5-5 tie and wouldn't allow the Bulldogs to get closer than three points the rest of the on its way to completing the sweep with a 25-18 victory.
The Flyers hit .232 in the contest recording 42 kills against 10 errors in 138 total attacks.
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) and
Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) had 10 kills apiece in the contest while Stefanon added seven kills.
Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) and
Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) had 13 and 12 assists respectively.
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) had a team-best 20 digs while Stefanon added five total blocks.
In its second game of the day, Lewis never trailed in the opening set as it used a 15-6 run to gain some separation and extend its lead to 19-9. The lead grew to as many as 11 points before settling on the 25-15 final.
The Flyers led 6-4 early in the second stanza before going on a 17-6 run to build their largest lead of the set at 23-10 on their way to a 25-12 victory. Lewis hit .286 in the frame and was led by Stefanon with six kills in the set.
Lewis trailed by as many as two points in the third frame before seizing control with an 8-2 run. Greening and
Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had two kills apiece in the run while
Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West) added one. The Panthers (4-3, 4-3 GLVC) cut the Flyer lead to 19-16 after a ball handling error by
Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) but that would be the closest, they got as Lewis closed the match on a 6-2 run to win 25-18.
The Flyers hit .237 in the match with 42 kills against 11 errors in 131 chances. Stefanon had a match-high nine kills while Greening added eight and Schlechte finished with seven kills. Sobieralski had 16 assists and two aces while Stefanon finished with six blocks and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had 21 digs.
Lewis returns to the court next Saturday (March 6) for another triangular match at Rockhurst. The Flyers will take on the host Hawks at 10 a.m. and then will take on the Quincy Hawks at 2 p.m. Both matches will be at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse.
