Top Ranked Flyers Take Down Two Top-25 Teams

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's top ranked women's volleyball team took down a pair of top 25 teams on Saturday defeating, No. 21 Rockhurst 3-1 and No. 24 Quincy, 3-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse in Kansas City, Mo.

Lewis improves to 9-0 overall and in the GLVC while Rockhurst is 5-5, 3-5 GLVC and Quincy is 8-3, 6-3 GLVC.

No. 1 Lewis 3, No. 21 Rockhurst 1 (25-23, 25-12, 17-25, 25-14)

The Flyers hit .273 on its way to the win, getting 12 kills from Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) while Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) added 11 kills and Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) finished with nine kills. Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) directed the offense with 22 assists and also had a match-high 13 digs to record the double-double. Venema and Stefanon finished with eight and six blocks respectively.

Lewis' defense held the Hawks to a .082 hitting percentage with Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) tallying 11 digs while Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West) added 10 digs.

No. 1 Lewis 3, No. 24 Quincy 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20)

The Flyers hit .274 against Quincy, racking up 49 kills, while limiting the Hawks to a .140 hitting percentage.

Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) finished with a match and season-high 17 kills in the contest while Stefanon added 10 kills. Sobieralski had 17 assists in the match while Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) had 13 assists and Poppen finished with 10 assists.

Poppen was one of three Lewis players to reach double figures in digs with 17 while Sobieralski added 15 and Schlechte finished with 10 digs. Venema and Van Loo each had four blocks in the match while Stefanon finished with three blocks.
