St. Louis, Mo. - The Lewis University women's soccer team opened its season Friday (Feb. 26) with a 0-0 tie against Missouri-St. Louis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Lou Fusz Stadium. Both teams move to 0-0-1 overall and in the GLVC.
The Tritons played with the edge throughout the first half, registering all six shots in the half and had a 3-1 corner kick advantage. However, only one of those shots came on goal and was turned away by Flyer goalie
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England/).
Missouri-St. Louis posted six more shots in the second half, with three coming on goal, while the Flyers tallied five shots, with one on goal. The Tritons had three straight corner kicks starting in the 77th minute, culminating in a shot that was saved by Clark that ended the threat.
In the final minutes Lewis threatened but was turned away as an
Abby Gustafson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) shot was saved by Brynne Qualley.
Both teams had a shot on goal in the first overtime period, with Gustafson registering her second shot on goal in the 99th minute.
In the second overtime Missouri-St. Louis had a pair of corner kicks lead to a shot on goal that was saved by Clark in the 103rd minute. The Flyers had the final rally in the 109th minute with shots on goal by
Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg) and
Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South), but both shots were saved by Qualley.
UMSL finished with a 15-9 shot advantage and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Clark made five saves in goal for the shutout.
Lewis is back in action Sunday at 12 p.m. at McKendree.
