ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team begins its second season of competition on Saturday as it travels to Indianapolis to take on the No. 10 Indianapolis Greyhounds at 1 p.m. (CT).
The Flyers made strides in their first season in 2020 finishing the abbreviated year with a 5-2 record and won their final four games of the COVID shortened season.
Head Coach
Joe Perruzzi returns 16 players from last year's squad including four of their top five returning scorers from a season ago.
Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) lead the team with 22 goals and 12 assists for a total of 34 points while
Thomas Purfeerst (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) added 14 goals and 10 assists for 24 points,
Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) was second on the team with 15 goals and added eight assists for a total of 23 points and
Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) had 12 goals and four assists to finish with 16 points.Lewis also returns its top face-off specialist in
Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) who won 64 percent of his face-offs a season ago and led the team with 86 ground balls.
On the defensive side,
Xan Brouillet (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and
Drew Dingle (Verona, Wis./Verona) tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with seven apiece while
Soren Thrawl (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and
Tyler Shively-Ablang (Las Vegas, Nev./Northwest Career and Technical School) added six caused turnovers each.
Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) started all seven games between the pipes making 77 saves and had a save percentage of 64 percent.
Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic the Flyers will play a 12-game double round robin GLVC only schedule this year. They will play each team home and away.
Lewis opens its schedule with the Greyhounds who are the two-time defending champs. They return All-GLVC selections Austin Barnett, Jack Belobrajdic, Drew Billing, Josh Jackson, Jordan McKenzie and Brian Robb. The Hounds received 34 points and four first place votes in the GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll and are ranked 10th in United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Preseason Division II Poll.
Rockhurst was picked to finish second in the poll receiving 30 points and one first place vote and is ranked 16th in the USILA poll. Lindenwood is ranked 14th in the USILA poll and was tabbed to finish third in the GLVC receiving 29 points and the final two first place votes. Maryville edged out the Flyers for fourth with 19 points while Lewis picked up 18 points.
Davenport, an associate member for men's lacrosse in the GLVC, was picked to finish sixth with 11 points and Quincy was picked to finish seventh receiving six points.
The 2021 GLVC Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament will feature the top four finishers in the league standings and will be held at Hunter Stadium on the campus of Lindenwood University from May 7-9. The semifinals will be played on Friday, May 7, and the Championship decided on Sunday, May 9.
