Lewis Women’s Soccer Tallies First Win Of Season

Romeoville, Ill. Lewis University women's soccer team got its first win of the season defeating Illinois Springfield 1-0 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) match at Lewis Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers improve to 1-3-1 while the Prairie Stars dip to 1-5.

The Flyers got on the board first, with a goal from Cameron Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South), assisted by Lucy Clark (Bristol, England/) and Alex Dennis (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) in the ninth minute. Clark played the ball downfield and Dennis flicked it forward to Sengstock who blasted it into the net for her first goal as a Flyer. Less than a minute later, Abby Gustafson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) tried to double up on the Prairie Stars, but her attempt sailed over the crossbar.

Late in the half, the Prairie Stars tried to score the equalizer on an attempt from Rylee Billington but failed to convert.

Both teams played more aggressively in the second half of play, as they had six fouls each. The Prairie Stars had a chance in the 48th minute but it was turned away by Clark.

In the 85th minute, Abby Dellamorte had back-to-back attempts to put the Prairie Stars on the board and deny the Flyers win, but Lewis managed to keep Illinois-Springfield at bay for the last two minutes, locking down on defense to preserve the shutout.

Illinois-Springfield had more shots, 6-5, with four on target, and also had the advantage in corners, 4-2. Lewis had three shots on target and had fewer fouls, with nine, compared to the 11 from the Prairie Stars.

The Flyers are on the road against Quincy on Friday, March 19th at 5 pm.
