ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's tennis team snapped a two-match skid with a 5-4 win over Wheaton on Thursday afternoon at the Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park, Ill. The Flyers improve to 3-4 on the season while the Thunder drop to 1-1.
Lewis won two of the three doubles matches to take the early lead as
Juan Martin Ramirez Mejia (Medellin, Colombia) and
David Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia/) defeated Anderson Park and Joey Geisz 8-3 at No. 1 doubles while
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/) and
Pedja Trifunovic (Aleksandrovac, Serbia/) knocked off Cody Ching and Jack Wenzel in No. 2 doubles competition. The Flyer tandem of
Jonathan Maghirang (Woodridge, Ill./) and
Daniel Sowa (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) fell to Jacob Panjwani and Alex Winters 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Lewis won three of the first four matches to secure the victory. Ambrozic defeated Wenzel in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to open the singles portion of the dual. He was followed by Lusti who knocked off Ching in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Wheaton cut the Flyer lead to 4-2 as Park defeated Ramirez Mejia 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Trifunovic clinched the victory for Lewis as he defeated Geisz 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. The Thunder took the final two singles matches as Panjwani defeated Sowa 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 singles and Winters beat
Jeremy Charles (Grenada/Cedar International School) 7-6, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Flyers return to the courts next Tuesday as they take on St. Francis at noon at Challenge Fitness in Lockport, Ill.
