ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lewis University's fifth ranked men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to four with a sweep at Lindenwood on Friday evening at the Robert F. Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo. The Flyers improve to 12-2 overall and 7-2 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association while the Lions fall to 4-8 overall and 1-8 in the MIVA.
The opening set was tightly contested with neither side holding a lead larger than three points for a majority of the set. Lewis pulled away late as it closed the frame on a 7-1 run to take the stanza 25-18.
Kyle Bugee (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) had a kill and two aces in the set deciding run while
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) added a kill.
The Flyers dominated the second set as they used a 14-2 run to turn an early deficit into an 11-point lead. The Lions got as close as five late in the frame before Lewis scored the final three points of the stanza to win it 25-17. Lewis hit .364 in the set while holding Lindenwood to a .200 hitting percentage.
The Lions led by as many as five in the third stanza, but the Flyers came back thanks to a 10-5 run to tie the set at 23 on an attack error by Jeremy Kirch. Lindenwood went right back in front on a service error to get to set point first to try and extend the match.
Lewis scored back-to-back points from Bugee and a block from
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) to take a 25-24 lead and forced the Lions to take a timeout. The two sides continued to trade points as both had chances to win the set but neither did until the Flyers scored the final three points of the match to win the set 32-20 on a kill from Murray.
Lewis finished the contest hitting .367 recording 42 kills against nine errors in 90 attempts. Coenen lead the Flyers with 14 kills while Bugee added 12 and Mitchem finished with nine kills. Kauling distributed 36 assists and
Carlos Jimenez (Miami Beach, Fla./FLVS) had a match-high nine digs. Mitchem also added six blocks in the contest.
Lewis' defense held the Lions to a .239 attack percentage (38 kills against 17 errors in 88 chances). Phil Swartz led Lindenwood with 13 kills while Alex Pappas and Diego Negron had eight kills apiece. Connor Sheehan finished with 35 assists and Negron had seven digs.
The Flyers and Lions meet again on Sunday at Hyland Arena with first severe scheduled for 1 p.m.
