Long Balls Propel Flyers To Sweep Of Southern Indiana

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Lewis University's softball hit four home runs in its doubleheader sweep of Southern Indiana, 7-2 and 9-1 in six innings, on Saturday afternoon at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers improve to 10-7 (3-3 in the GLVC) and the Screaming Eagles drop to 2-7 (0-2 in the GLVC).

Game 1 – Lewis 7, Southern Indiana 2
The Flyers got on the board first as Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) doubled to left with one out in the inning and scored on Kristin Kavalauskas' (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) second home run of the season to right field.

The Screaming Eagles scored on a walk by Mackendrie Bedrick as the Eagles had the bases loaded and brought in Jordan Rager. Rachel Martinez followed with an infield single to tie the game as Katie Back scored the tying run.

Lewis regained the lead in the home half of the second. With one out, Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic) and Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) hit back-to-back singles. A wild pitch advanced both runners and then a walk to Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) loaded the bases. Lofthouse drove in Bukovsky with a single to elft.

The Flyers added two more runs in the third inning as Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) hit the second home run of the game to center field to bring in Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs)..

Serena scored again in the fifth on Bukovsky's single and then Lewis sealed the win after Lofthouse drove in her second run of the game in the sixth.

The Flyers outhit the Screaming Eagles, 12-5, led by Lofthouse with three. Kavalauskas, Bukovsky, and Serena followed with two hits each. David got the win in the circle allowing two runs, on five hits with eight walks and eight strikeouts to improve to 2-3 on the season.

Game 2 – Lewis 9 Southern Indiana 1 6 innings
Lewis struck first in the backend of the doubleheader with Taylor hitting a single and then advancing to third base following two wild pitches. Taylor scored the first run on Kavalauskas' double down the left field line.

The Flyers took advantage of two Screagle errors in the second inning scoring six runs on five hits.  Lofthouse singled back up the middle and the ball was deflected by the pitcher and was picked up the second baseman. Rachel Martinez tried to get Lofthouse at first, but her throw was wild allowing Bukovsky and Magaldi to score on the play.

Kavalauskas followed with a single through the left side of the infield to score Taylor and then Swartzentruber hit a three-run homer to center to cap the scoring in the inning.

Mary Bean scored USI's lone run in the third inning as Mary Bean scored on Makenzie Bedrick's bunt single to the pitcher.

The Flyers sealed the victory on Magaldi's two-run homer to center in the sixth inning to pick up the run-rule victory.

Lewis outhit Southern Indiana 9-3 in the second game as Magaldi, Taylor, and Kavalauskas had two hits each. Serena picked up the victory in the circle throwing a complete game allowing one run on three hits with six punchouts.
