Overtime Goal Lifts Flyers Past William Jewell

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Courtney Sengstock's (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) goal 3:42 into overtime lifted Lewis' women's soccer team past the William Jewell Cardinals 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improved to 2-5-1 while the Cardinals remain winless at 0-7-2.

The Flyers managed to take the first attempt of the game following an attempt from Cameron Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) but it was blocked by the Cardinals defense. Sengstock tried again from inside the box but it was saved by Kaylie Kappelmann.

Coming off the bench, Bridgette Covelli (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) managed to get past the defense, but her attempt went wide right and sent the game into the half scoreless

Both teams were physical, but Lewis was playing more aggressively as they were whistled for seven fouls against two for William Jewell. The Flyers attempted four shots in the half with one on target.

In the 53rd minute, Co. Sengstock tried to put the Flyers on the board, but her shot went wide left. Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg) took her chances right after, but her attempt sailed over the goal

Kayla Crowder was looking to put the Cardinals up but missed the goal to the left. Szymanski attempted to close the match with a late goal, however, the shot was wide to the right.

Three minutes into overtime, the Flyers scored the game-winner as Grace DeVaux (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) headed the ball out of Lewis' end ahead to Niamh Hehir (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) who sent it downfield to Co. Sengstock. Co. Sengstock got behind the defense and chipped it past the keeper and into the goal for her second goal in three games.

The Flyers outshot the Cardinals, 12-4, with four of those on target. Emily Villasenor (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) stopped the only shot she faced to pick up her first career win and shutout.

Lewis hosts Rockhurst on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium.
