ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought contest to 14th ranked Indianapolis 13-9 on Saturday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers fall to 2-5 overall and in the GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 5-1 overall and in the conference.
UIndy jumped on top with a goal 4:09 into the contest as Drew Billig scored off a pass from Josh Jackson. Lewis came up back less than two minutes to tie the score on
Nolan Dalep's (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) 14th goal of the season from
Keith Parkman II (San Diego, Calif./Serra).
The Hounds retook the lead late in the quarter as Kansai Garey scored with an assist from Matt Schoeneck.
UIndy extended its lead early in the second quarter on back-to-back goals from Wyatt Auyer in the span of 1:24.
Thomas Purfeerst (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) cut the lead in half for the Flyers as he scored the first of his five goals on the afternoon.
The Greyhounds came right back with two goals in the span of 0:50 to take a 6-2 lead. Garey scored his second of the day and Mike Doyle added a goal with 7:45 left in the half.
Purfeerst made it 6-3 as he scored with 1:04 remaining in the second quarter with an assist from
Xan Brouillet (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial).
Lewis scored three of the first four goals to begin the third quarter to cut the UIndy lead to 7-6 on goals from Purfeerst, Parkman II and
Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa./McDowell). The Hounds though closed the quarter strong scoring three times in the final 2:30 to take a 10-6 heading into the final quarter.
The Flyers closed to within three a couple of times in the final 15 minutes but were unable to get any closer.
Purfeerst paced the Lewis attack with five goals while Parkman II added two more and Dalep and Daigle had one each.
Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) won 13 face-offs and scooped up 11 ground balls.
Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) made 16 saves and also scooped up 16 ground balls.
The Flyers were outshot in the contest 47-24 including 29-17 in shots on goal.
Lewis is back at home next Saturday hosting Quincy at 3 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
