ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's fourth ranked men's volleyball team swept Quincy for its seventh straight win on Saturday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 15-2, 10-2 MIVA while the Hawks fall to 4-11, 1-11 MIVA.
Lewis used a 9-3 run midway through the opening set to break free from Quincy and take a 19-11 lead after a kill from
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin). The Hawks cut the margin to six on a block by Eddie Jaubauskas but that was the closest they got as the Flyers closed the set scoring four of the final six points to win the opener 25-17.
Lewis led by two in the middle stanza before going on a 9-3 run to extend its lead to 19-11 after a kill from Coenen. Quincy closed to within 22-19 after a service error from
Colin McClintic (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) but the Flyers scored three of the final four points to take the set 25-20 and the commanding 2-0 lead.
The Flyers gave up the first point of the third set but quickly erased the deficit with an 8-1 run to grab a six-point advantage. That lead grew to as much as nine at 20-11 after a kill from Coenen. The Hawks ran off four straight to get within 20-15 but wouldn't get any closer as Lewis scored five of the final nine points to take the set 25-19 and complete the sweep.
The Flyers finished the contest with a hitting percentage of .443 recording 34 kills against seven errors in 61 chances. Coenen had a match-high 11 kills while
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) finished with nine kills.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) dished out 29 assists and Coenen was tied for the match-high with seven digs. McClintic,
Kyle Bugee (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) and
TJ Murray (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) had three blocks apiece.
Lewis' defense held Quincy to a .120 attack percentage (31 kills against 21 errors in 83 chances). Michael Ladner and Omari Wheeler had 10 kills apiece to lead the Hawks. Matt Friddle had 26 assists and Manuel Hernandez finished with seven digs.
The Flyers wrapup the regular season next weekend as they make the trek north to take on Loyola Chicago next Thursday (April 1) at 5 p.m.
