Top Ranked Lewis Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Illinois Springfield

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's top ranked women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to 14 matches with a sweep of Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers are now 14-0 overall and in the GLVC while the Prairie Stars drop to 3-13 overall and 3-12 in the GLVC.

The opening set was tightly contested with eight ties and three lead changes. It was tied at 14 when Lewis seized control with a 5-0 run. Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) had two kills in the run while Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg), Julianna Van Loo and Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West) had a kill each.

UIS wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the set as the Flyers closed the stanza on a 6-1 run to win 25-16.

Lewis raced out to an early lead in the middle frame and never looked back as they led by as many as six points. The Prairie Stars got to within 17-14 after a kill from Megan Krasowski but that was the closest, they got as the Flyers pulled away late to win 25-20.

Lewis dominated the third set hitting .314 with 14 kills against three errors. It led by as many as 12 in the stanza and was led by Schlechte with four kills while Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) had three kills and Van Loo and Farah Taki (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) had two kills apiece.

The Flyers matched their season-high hitting percentage of .317 with 44 kills against 12 errors in 101 chances. Schlechte had a match-high 11 kills to lead the way while Venema finished with nine and Van Loo had seven. Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) and Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) had 19 assists each and Andrea Zeiser (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) had a match-high 16 digs. Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) had six total blocks in the contest.

Lewis plays its final road game of the regular season next Friday as it travels to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree at 5 p.m.
