Stefanon Sets Career Block Record In Top Ranked Flyers Sweep At McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. -- Lewis University women's volleyball team notched a straight-sets victory over McKendree on Friday evening at Harry M. Statham Court in Lebanon, Ill. The Flyers maintained their perfect record at 15-0 while the Bearcats dropped to 5-10, both teams are in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

With her two blocks in the match, Lewis' Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) became the program's career leader for most total blocks with 472 breaking the record she shared with Aly Schneider.

The teams went back and forth early in the first se, but the Flyers managed to gain a five-point advantage over the Bearcats midway through the set. Jaime Poppen secured the first set win after a service ace.

It was a slow start for the Flyers in the second frame as the Bearcats matched them point for point. After a Bearcats timeout, Lewis scored nine of the final 12 points to win the set 25-19 on a kill from Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West).

The Flyers used a 6-1 run early in set three to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 9-5 lead. McKendree cut the lead to 11-10 after a kill from McKenna Ross. Lewis pushed its lead to 17-11 after an ace from Poppen but the Bearcats refused to go quietly as they ran off five in a row to cut the margin to 17-16 after an ace from Colleen Preusser.

The Flyers responded after the timeout with a 6-3 run to extend their lead to 23-19 on a kill from Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg). McKendree cut the margin to three a couple of times but Lewis was able to finish off the sweep as Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) terminated a ball to win the set 25-21.

The Flyers hit .268 in the match, registering 42 kills against 12 errors on 112 attempts. Greening, along with Stefanon, led the team in kills with nine each and Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) recorded seven. Poppen had 13 out of the team's 53 digs, followed by Haley Soberalski with 12.

Lewis returns Neil Carey Arena on Friday, April 9th taking on Indianapolis at 7 p.m.
