PLAINFIELD, Ill. – For the second time in the last week the Lewis University men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 contest, this time to Purdue Northwest on Thursday (March 4) at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill.
The Flyers dropped the first doubles match as
Daniel Sowa (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) and
Jonathan Maghirang (Woodridge, Ill./) fell to Marcos Diaz and Jonas Franssen 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Juan Martin Ramirez Mejia (Medellin, Colombia) and
David Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia/) picked up the win in No. 1 doubles action over Miguel Flores and Levent Evyapan 6-4 to even the doubles competition at a match apiece.
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/) and
Pedja Trifunovic (Aleksandrovac, Serbia/) helped secure the first point of the match for Lewis as the pair defeated Leon Kah and Luca Kirchhoff 7-5.
The Flyers dropped the first two singles matches as
Earl Lim (/) lost to Franssen 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and Sowa suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Paul Hawes at No. 5 singles. Trifunovic tied the match at two defeating Evyapan 6-2, 6-2 in No. 4 singles action and then Ambrozic followed with a win at No. 3 singles defeating Kirchhoff 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to give Lewis a 3-2 advantage in the match.
The Flyers needed to win one of the last two matches to win the match but Ramirez Mejia fell in three sets to Flores 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 singles while Lusti defeated Kah 7-6 (9-7) in the opening set but dropped the final two sets 4-6, 5-7 at No. 2 singles.
The Pride move to 3-3 while, Lewis falls to 1-2.
The Flyers are back in action on Monday (March 8) taking on Michigan Tech at 10:45 a.m. at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill.
