Flyers Win Home Opener 2-1 Over Screaming Eagles

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Friday (March 5), defeating Southern Indiana 2-1 at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers move to 1-2 overall and in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Screaming Eagles fall to 0-2 overall and in the GLVC.

The Flyers took an early lead when Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) found the back of the net in the 16th minute, with an assist from Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North).

The two teams played a fairly even first half as each team had three shots, while the Flyers got all three of their shots on goal to just one from the Eagles. Lewis recorded the lone corner kick in the half.

Southern Indiana evened the score at the 52:24 mark on a Colten Walsh goal, but the Flyers came right back when Justin Darlage (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) tallied his first of the year on an assist from Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) at 53:52 to regain the lead for the Flyers, 2-1.

The Eagles went on the attack after Lewis retook the lead with a shot on goal a minute after the goal, but Will Maurice (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) made the save. Justin Brooks had three more shots on goal over the next 20 minutes of the game, but each time, Maurice was up to the task, preserving the lead and the win for the Flyers.

Southern Indiana outshot the Flyers 10-7 in the second half, including an 8-3 mark on goal, and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Maurice made eight saves in goal for the Flyers, while Sebastian Arguello (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville), John Oshakpemhe (Auchi, Edo State, Nigeria/Al-Mukhtar Secondary School) and Mwanga all registered two shots.

Lewis is back on the pitch Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Indianapolis at Lewis Stadium.
