ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought contest against Indianapolis 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers fall to 0-3-1 overall and in the GLVC while the Greyhounds move to 2-1 overall and in the conference.
Lewis had the game's first scoring chance in the sixth minute as
Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg) fired a shot from 25 yards out that was saved by Sophia Saucerman. The Flyers had two more chances later in the half as
Miranda Nirchi's (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) shot had a shot blocked in the 32nd minute and
Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) had a shot saved in the 36th minute.
UIndy got its first shot in the 42nd minute as Maddy Thies put on one goal but
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England/) was there to make the save.
Lewis outshot the Greyhounds 3-1 in the first 45 minutes and put two of those on goal.
The Flyers had a scoring chance early in the second half as
Grace DeVaux (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) tried to score off a corner kick from
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) but Saucerman was there to make the save.
Lewis had another chance in the 67th minute as Levins had a shot at an open goal but Saucerman stretched out and was able to corral the shot and prevent the goal.
In the 69th minute, UIndy was awarded a penalty kick when
Anna Stearns (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) committed a foul in the box and Dana Youssef converted on the opportunity knocking it into the lower left corner.
The Flyers had two chances in the final 10 minutes, but
Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) missed a shot wide and Havelka-Vanderplow hit one off the crossbar.
Lewis outshot the Greyhounds 8-3 in the contest and 4-3 in shots on goal. Nirchi and Levins had two shots apiece while Szymanski, Sengstock, Havelka-Vanderplow and DeVaux had a shot each. Clark made two saves in goal.
The Flyers are back in action next Sunday when they host Illinois Springfield at 12 p.m.
