PLAINFIELD, Ill. – Lewis University's women's tennis team began a three-match home stand with a 6-1 win over Michigan Tech on Monday at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill. The Flyers improve to 2-1 on the season while the Huskies drop to 0-2.
Lewis won all three doubles matches to take the opening point of the contest.
Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Garcia de Orta) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) defeated Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles it was
Sophie Davis (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) beating Mirna Golac and Marina Fernandez 7-6 (7-4) and
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) won by default at No. 3 doubles.
Smith scored the first point in the singles competition as she defeated Opalewski in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. MTU got a point back at No. 3 singles as Neva Manas defeated Reisch 6-4, 6-2. Vujanic put the Flyers ahead 3-1 after defeating Fernandez in No. 4 singles action 6-4, 6-1. Pedroso clinched the match was she rallied from down a set to defeat Bobik at No. 1 singles 2-6, 7-6 (8-6) and 6-1. Sueflohn closed out the match defeating Golac in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 10-5 at No. 5 singles. At No. 6 singles it was Davis winning by default.
Lewis continues its homestand on Thursday (March 11) as it hosts Chicago State beginning at 9:15 am at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill.
