PLAINFIELD, Ill. – Lewis University's women's tennis team was edged by Illinois Springfield 4-3 at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill., on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers fall to 6-4, 1-2 GLVC while the Prairie Stars move to 8-2, 2-1 GLVC.
UIS won the two doubles matches to take the opening point of the contest. Neha Mokhasi and Sina Skjelstad defeated
Sophie Davis (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) 6-0 at No. 2 doubles to open play and then Carol Quevedo and Franca Bucco knocked off
Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Garcia de Orta) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) won their doubles match by default.
In singles action, the Prairie Stars won three of the four matches that were contested. Smith got the Flyers on the board as she knocked off Skjelstad 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to even the match at one. Pedroso was beaten by Quevedo 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Mokhasi defeated Vujanic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, UIS clinched the match with a win at No. 4 singles as Bucco knocked off Reisch 7-5, 6-3. Sueflohn and Davis won by default at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
Lewis returns to the courts next Friday (April 16) as it takes on Lindenwood at 2 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
