ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Lewis University men's soccer team upset the 12th ranked Maryville Saints, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 7-5-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), while the Saints dip to 9-3-1, also in the GLVC.
Lewis challenged Liam Walraven early in the contest but attempts from
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) and
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) were both saved.
The Saints managed to counter with three shots but were unable to convert.
In the 31st minute, Baumann had a chance to put the Flyers on the board, but his penalty kick was saved by Walraven.
Carter Reiss had a chance to give Maryville the lead, but his shot went out right, sending the match into the half.
Early in the second half, a scuffle between
Seth Dilworth (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Grady Schliepsiek resulted in both given a red card, removing them from the match.
Later in the half, Mwanga was able to get past the Saints defense but his attempt was blocked.
In the 82nd minute, Lewis got on the board as
Matt Budreck (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) found Mwanga in the box who played it back to Abdul Ganyu-Iddrisu for his first collegiate goal.
Emil Antonacci tried to score the equalizer for the Saints but his attempt went over the crossbar.
The Flyers sealed the win in the 88th minute as
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) played a ball to
Nathaniel Campbell (Palm Bay, Fla./Heritage) who went down the right side of the box and shot it across the goal and in for his first goal of the season.
Lewis outshot Maryville, 17-8, having nine shots on target compared to the three for the Saints.
Both teams were physical throughout in the match, but the Saints committed 12 fouls to 11 for Lewis and received two yellow cards to one for the Flyers.
Mwanga led the way for Lewis with four shots, followed by
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) with three.
Cedric Sengl recorded three shots for the Saints, followed by Antonacci with one.
Lewis is on the road for their last game of the regular season at Lindenwood on Friday, April 16th, at 3:30 p.m.
