Mwanga’s Goal In Double Overtime Sends Flyers To GLVC Semifinals

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Jimmy Mwanga's (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) game-winning goal 1:25 into the second overtime period lifted Lewis men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Missouri-St. Louis on Monday afternoon at Lewis Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Spring 2021 Soccer Tournament. With the win the Flyers improve to 9-5-1 and advance to Friday's GLVC Semifinal contest against top seeded Indianapolis at 1:30 p.m. at Lindenwood's Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.

Lewis, seeded fourth, struck first scoring in the fourth minute as Matt Budreck (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) headed home a cross from Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township) from the middle of the box for his first goal of the season. The Flyers had another chance in the ninth minute but Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu's (Accra, Ghana/Eastern Florida State College) shot was saved by Anton Mukhin.

Lewis had another chance in the 17th minute as Budreck's bid for a second goal was denied by Mukhin and then five minutes later Iniguez had a chance that was stopped by Mukhin.

UMSL (7-5-3), seeded fifth, tied the game off a mistake by the Flyers as Garrett Bass tapped in a misplayed pass by Will Maurice (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) for his third goal of the season.

The Tritons had a chance to take the lead less than a minute into the second half, but Maurice denied Tommy Naumann.

UMSL had another chance with less than 20 minutes to play but Bradley Fritsche's shot was saved off the line by Justin Darlage (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) to keep the game tied.

Mwanga had a chance at the game-winner a couple of minutes later but his shot hit off the crossbar and went out of play. Mwanga had another chance with less than eight minutes to play but was denied by Mukhin.

The Tritons had two chances in the first three minutes of the first overtime period but Naumann's shot was blocked and Nick Schreiber's shot missed wide.

Budreck had a chance at the game winner with 5:33 remaining but his header attempt was saved by Mukhin.

The Flyers game-winner was setup by Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) as his shot was blocked into the side netting for a corner kick. Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) took the corner and served it into the box for Mwanga who got his head to it and headed it off the crossbar and down into the goal for his team leading seventh goal of the season.

Lewis outshot UMSL 13-10 in the contest including 7-4 in shots on goal. Budreck put all three of his shots on goal while Mwanga had two shots on target. Maurice made two saves in goal. The Tritons had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Flyers will play the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds in Friday's second semifinal. UIndy, the top seed, in the tournament defeated Lewis 3-1 back on March 7 at Lewis Stadium.
