Flyers Win Opener At Truman 4-3 But Fall In Nightcap

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Lewis' softball team split its doubleheader at Truman State on Sunday afternoon as the Flyers took the opener 4-3 but dropped the nightcap 6-2. Lewis is now 16-11, 7-7 in the GLVC while the Bulldogs are 9-17, 6-10 GLVC.

Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) led the Flyer offense recording five hits in six at-bats in the doubleheader while Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished with three hits and Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) and Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) had two hits apiece. Magaldi and Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) each drove in two runs.

Game 1 – Lewis 4, Truman 3
The opening game of the twinbill was scoreless heading into the fourth inning when Lewis sent seven batters to the plate scoring four runs on three hits. Kavalauskas opened the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. With one out, Kavalauskas and Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) advanced to third and second respectively on a wild pitch.

Serena drove in the first run of the gam with a sacrifice fly to right scoring Kavalauskas and advanced Swartzentruber to third. Magaldi followed with a single to left scoring Swartzentruber and then Calderon hit a home run to center to make it 4-0.

Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) held Truman's offense to just three hits but walked four over the first six innings but didn't allow a run until the seventh. The Bulldogs got four straight hits to open the inning scoring three runs and had the tying run at first with no one out. David got out of the jam getting a strikeout, a fly out to right and a line out to third to end the game.

Taylor, Serena and Kavalauskas had two hits apiece in the opener to lead the Flyers. David improved to 8-4 pitching a complete game allowing three runs on seven hits with eight punchouts against four walks.

Game 2 – Truman 6, Lewis 2
Truman jumped on top in game two scoring three runs in the third inning on a pair of home runs from Kayla Quanstrum and Ellie Weltha. Quanstrum led off the inning with a blast to left and later in the inning with two outs Weltha hit a two-run shot to center.

Lewis got a run back in the fourth. With two outs and a Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) on third Magaldi singled to left on the first pitch to bring in Powell. Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic) followed with a walk to put the tying runs on base but a strikeout ended the threat.

The Bulldogs added to their lead with two more runs in the fourth. Maria McGonegle homered to left to lead off the inning and later in the inning Macy Taylor singled up the middle to drive in Lauren Stade.

Truman scored its final run in the fifth as McGonegle drove in her second run of the contest with a single to right scoring Weltha.

The Flyers got a run back in the sixth as Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, IL/Providence Catholic High School) hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Serena.

Lewis was held to six hits in game two with Serena accounting for half of them. Taylor, Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and Magaldi had a hit each. Anna Gustafson (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) took the loss allowing four runs on five hits with a strikeout in three innings pitched to fall to 2-3 on the season.

The Flyers travel to Quincy, Ill., on Monday morning to take on the Hawks in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
