Lewis Softball Splits With Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – Lewis' softball team split its doubleheader at Quincy on Monday at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex in Quincy, Ill. The Flyers took the opener 5-0 but dropped the second game 4-3 in nine innings. Lewis is now 17-12 overall and 8-8 in the GLVC while the Hawks move to 13-19, 5-11 GLVC.

Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) led the Flyer offense with five hits in the doubleheader while Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) and Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had four hits each.

Game 1 – Lewis 5, Quincy 0
Lewis jumped on top in the second inning scoring three runs on three hits in the frame. Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) led off the inning with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on Magaldi's sacrifice bunt. Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) followed with a single down the left field line to put runners at the corner with one out.

Calderon then stole second to put two in scoring position for Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic). Bukovsky drove in Serena with a sacrifice fly to center and then Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) hit a two-run homer to left to bring home Calderon.

The Flyers added to its lead in the fifth inning scoring two more runs. Taylor led off the inning with a double to left center and went to third on  Lofthouse's single through the left side of the infield. Lofthouse stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park). Kavalauskas drove in Taylor with a groundout to second and then Swartzentruber scored Lofthouse with a bunt single.

Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) held the Hawks bats in check for the first five innings allowing just a single and a hit batter. She ran into trouble in the sixth as Quincy loaded the bases with one out, but David got Chelsea Hooker to pop out to Swartzentruber and retired Bailey Mitchell on a fly out to Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge) in center to end the threat.

The Flyers recorded nine hits in the contest with Taylor recording three of those while Lofthouse added two. Swartzentruber, Serena, Magaldi and Calderon had a hit apiece. David went the distance pitching a four-hit complete game shutout to win her sixth straight game to improve to 9-4 on the season. She struck out eight in the contest and allowed only one walk.

Game 2 – Quincy 4, Lewis 3 9 innings
Lewis had plenty of opportunities in the first five innings of the contest putting multiple runners on base in four of the five frames but was unable to score until the sixth inning.

Magaldi and Calderon opened the inning with back-to-back hits. Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, IL/Providence Catholic High School) advanced both runners with a groundout to short for Taylor. Taylor dropped down a bunt between the plate and the circle as Jayle Jennings couldn't field it cleanly which allowed Magaldi to score. Lofthouse drove in Calderon and advanced to Taylor to second with a sacrifice bunt to the first baseman and then Kavalauskas singled up the middle to drive in Taylor.

The Hawks got a run back in its half of the sixth as Mitchell led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.

The Flyers had a chance to tack on some insurance in the seventh but couldn't get a clutch hit.

Quincy tied the game in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Casey Brennan and Taylor Downer reached with back-to-back singles. Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) retired Ashley Gerber on an infield fly to Lofthouse but was unable to retire Mitchell as she doubled to left center out of the reach of a diving Bontrager to bring in Brennan and Downer. Serena left Mitchell stranded getting Courtney Kernich to pop out to short.

Lewis had an opportunity to retake the lead in the eighth but Swartzentruber grounded into a 53 double play to end the inning.

The Hawks had a chance in its half of the eighth getting the winning run to second with one out but were unable to score as David, pitching in relief of Serena, retired Brennan on a fielder's choice to second.

The Flyers put the go-ahead run on base in the ninth as Serena singled with one out in the inning but she was left stranded there.

Quincy won the game in the bottom of the frame rallying with two outs. Mitchell walked and then Kernich reached on an error by Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland). Ashley Poore blooped a single into shallow right driving in Mitchell with the winning run just ahead of the tag from Swartzentruber.

Lewis outhit the Hawks 15-11 in the contest but left 14 runners on base. Magaldi led the Flyers with four hits while Swartezentruber added three and Serena, Kavalauskas, Lofthouse and Calderon had two hits apiece.

Serena got the start allowing three runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts against two walks. David pitched the final inning allowing an unearned run on one hit to fall to 9-5 on the season.

Lewis is back at home on Saturday (April 17) hosting William Jewell in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
