ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team swept William Jewell 10-0 in five innings and 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers improve to 19-12, 10-8 GLVC while the Cardinals fall to 8-24, 7-13 GLVC.
Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) tossed a no-hitter in game one as she struck out five while walking four batters in the run rule shortened victory. She set down the side in order in both the first and third innings and had to work around two walks in the second, a lead-off walk in the fourth and a one out walk in the fifth. David improves to 10-5 on the season.
Lewis scored five times in the first as
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led off the game with a home run to right center.
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) walked and stole second and scored on
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) double down the left field line to make it 2-0.
Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) hit a two-run homer to center to make it 4-0. With two outs,
Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) reached on an error and scored on
Evie Calderon's (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) double to left as the Flyers sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.
Lewis added to its lead with five more runs in the fourth. With one out, Kavalauskas walked and advanced to second on Swartzentruber's single up the middle. David followed with a single down the right field line scoring Kavalauskas.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) hit a smash to third for an infield single to load the bases and then Magaldi hit a grand slam to left center for the final margin.
The Flyers had 11 hits in the contest and were led by Swartzentruber, Magaldi and Calderon with two apiece. Taylor, Lofthouse, Kavalauskas, David and Serena had a hit apiece.
In the second game, Lewis got on the board first in the third on Lofthouse's home run to left center with two out in the inning. The Flyers added to their lead with two more runs in the fifth as Calderon scored on a throwing error by the shortstop and Lofthouse scored on Kavalauskas' single down the right field line.
That was all the run support that Serena needed as she held Jewell's offense to just two hits in the contest while striking out seven to pick up the complete game shutout and improve to 5-2 on the season.
Lewis had six hits in the contest with Lofthouse recording two of those while Kavalauskas, Serena, Calderon and Anderson had a hit each.
The Flyers continue their homestand on Sunday hosting Rockhurst in a doubleheader beginning at noon at the Lewis Softball Field.
