ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Lewis University's women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought contest on Sunday afternoon to Missouri Western, 15-13 at Spratt Stadium in St. Joseph, Mo. The Flyers fall to 2-6, 0-3 GLVC while the Griffons improve to 3-6, 1-2 GLVC.
The two teams exchanged goals in the first five minutes of the contest and were tied at two after
Paige Zahler's (Verona, Wis./Verona) second goal of the contest. Lewis took a 3-2 lead on
Lindsey Traub's (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard High School) ninth goal of the season near the midway point of the opening half.
MWSU came back and tied it on Jorja Schooler's seventh goal of the season with 13:06 remaining in the half.
Alyssa Davidson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) gave the Flyers a 4-3 lead on a free position shot with 10:22 to go in the half as Lewis would take that lead into the break.
The Flyers scored 0:32 into the second half to extend their lead as
Emily Meredith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored her 12th goal of the season.
The Griffons went on a run scoring six goals in the span of 7:29 to take its largest lead of the game at 9-5. Karlin York and Madison Brady had two goals apiece in the run.
Lewis responded scoring five of the next six goals to tie the game at 10 on Traub's fourth of the contest.
Missouri Western countered scoring three of the next four goals to take a 13-11 lead with less than nine minutes to play.
The Flyers got to within one a couple of times late in the contest but were unable to get the equalizer as Madison Iandoli added an insurance goal with 2:36 to play on a free position shot.
Lewis outshot the Griffons 34-33 in the contest as both sides had 24 shots on goal in the contest. MWSU scooped up 34 ground balls to 33 for the Flyers.
Traub led the way for Lewis with four goals while
Meltonique Bowen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan), Carlie Serritellla and Zahler had two goals apiece. Lucich scooped up seven ground balls while Bowen won nine draw controls. Fornek made nine saves in goal for the Flyers.
Lewis returns home on Friday (April 16) to take on Quincy at 4 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
