ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Lewis University women's soccer team wrapped up the home portion of their Spring 2021 schedule defeating the Maryville Saints, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 5-6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), while the Saints drop to 5-5-3 also in the GLVC.
Maryville had the game's first scoring chance in the ninth minute, but Lexi Gentry's was wide right.
Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) had a chance a couple of minutes later but missed her shot wide and then
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) had a chance in the 13th minute that was saved by Katie Nash.
Havelka-Vanderplow gave Lewis the lead in the 21st minute as her shot went in the bottom right corner with an assist from
Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg).
The Saints were looking for the equalizer before the end of the half but an attempt from Molly Krispin went out to the left.
In the 60th minute, Erin Barnes had a chance at the equalizer, but her attempt was saved by
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England/).
The Flyers doubled up on the Saints shortly after as
Niamh Hehir (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) scored her second goal of the season with an assist from Havelka-Vanderplow.
Maryville scored late in the half as Gentry was able to get through the Lewis defense scoring her fifth goal of the season with 7:33 remaining in the contest.
Gentry had a chance at the equalizer with 2:09 remaining in the contest but her shot was saved off the line by a Flyer defender. Gentry had another chance 0:22 later but her shot missed wide.
The Flyers were outshot by the Saints, 9-6, but they managed to have more attempts on goal, 4-3. Havelka-Vanderplow, Hehir, and Sengstock recorded two shots for the Flyers while Gentry led the Saints with two.
Lewis plays its final game of the regular season on the road against Lindenwood on April 16th at 1 p.m.
