ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Lewis University men's soccer team defeated Lindenwood, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Hunter Stadium. The Flyers finished with a record of 8-5-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) while the Lions ended with a 3-11 record in the GLVC. The win also clinched a top four finish for Lewis in the GLVC standings and a first-round home game in the GLVC Tournament beginning on Monday (April 19).
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) got the Flyers on the board seven minutes into the match as he netted his first goal of the game on a volley from
Justin Darlage (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West).
Halfway through the first half, Ohm Harape was looking to score the equalizer for the Lions but his attempt was blocked by
Will Maurice (Minooka, Ill./Minooka).
Lewis doubled up on the Lions when
Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu (Accra, Ghana/Eastern Florida State College) scored off a penalty kick in the 37th minute.
Malek Akar-Jackson was able to put Lindenwood on the board before the half as he scored to the lower-left corner with an assist by Gabriel Miranda.
In the second half of play, the Lions managed to tie things up in the 60th minute after Harape successfully converted a penalty kick.Â
Mwanga broke the tie with the Lions ten minutes later, scoring his second goal of the game coming off an assist from
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North).
In the 78th minute, the Flyers added an insurance goal as
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) scored his first goal of the season off a pass by Ganiyu-Iddrisu.
The Lions had a chance to cut Lewis' lead to one goal with 1:21 remaining as they were awarded another penalty kick but Alex Imig's attempt was saved by Maurice.
Lindenwood outshot the Flyers in the match, 14-12, but Lewis had more attempts on target, 8-7. The Flyers where whistled for 12 fouls in the match compared to 11 for the Lions. Both teams were given three yellow cards while Lindenwood was given a red card in the 79th minute.
Mwanga and Beaulieu led the way for Lewis with four shots each followed by Ganiyu-Iddrisu and
Matt Budreck (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) with one. Mwanga tallied three shots on target while Beaulieu had two shots on target.
Harape led the Lions with five shots, followed by Joaquin Herrera and Andres Gutierrez with two shots apiece. Harape recorded four shots on target and Imig had one shot on target.
The Flyers will find out their opponent on Friday night after the rest of the matches are played. Lewis will play at 4 p.m. on Monday at Lewis Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tournament.
