Top Seeded Flyers Open GLVC Tournament With Sweep Of Eighth Seeded Truman State

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – Lewis University's second ranked volleyball team opened play at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a sweep of Truman State on Friday evening at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill. The Flyers improve to 17-1 while the Bulldogs finish their season with a record of 10-10.

Lewis dominated the opening set hitting .447 while recording 20 kills against just three errors in 38 swings. The Flyers opened the match on a 5-1 run and never looked back on its way to a 25-11 set victory. Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) had five kills and seven digs in the opening stanza while Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) and Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West) added four kills apiece.

Truman lead by as many as three early in the middle frame but Lewis fought back to take a 17-16 lead on a kill by Julianna Van Loo. The Flyers extended their lead to 22-19 when Stefanski and Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) stuffed Sam Yancy at the net. The Bulldogs cut Lewis' lead to 22-21 on a service error and a kill from Yancy but Lewis closed out the set scoring three of the final four points to win 25-22.

The third set was back-and-forth early before the Flyers started to pull away thanks to a 6-1 run allowing them grab a 15-9 lead after an attack error by Ellie Kaat. Truman made a late run closing to within 23-21 on a kill from Yancy but it would come up short as Lewis scored two of the final three points of the match to win 25-22 to complete the sweep.

The Flyers hit .285 in the match recording 53 kills against 16 errors in 130 swings. Greening led the way for Lewis with 13 kills while Schlechte added 10 kills and Stefanski finished with nine kills. Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) handed out 28 assists and Schlechte led the way with 20 digs.

The Flyer defense held the Bulldogs to a .143 attack percentage with 29 kills against 12 errors in 119 total attacks. Morgan Smith led Truman with 10 kills. Rachel DeFries and Katy Mortz ahd 12 assists apiece while Smith and Lindsey Woltering had 14 digs apiece.

Lewis is back in action at the Eastside Centre on Saturday evening taking on fifth seeded Missouri S&T at 5:30 p.m. in the second semifinal. The Miners defeated fourth seeded Quincy in straight sets on Friday.
