ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Lewis University women's tennis team was edged by Maryville, 4-3, on Saturday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo. The Flyers drop to 7-5, 2-3 in the GLVC while the Saints improve to 6-2, 4-2 in the GLVC.
The Saints won two doubles matches over the Flyers. Ashley Dowden and Maria Gouveia defeated
Sophie Davis (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) in No. 2 doubles, 6-1, while Maria Paula Suarez and Georgina Cupper beat
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) and
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) in No.3 doubles, 6-0. The Flyers managed to win No.1 doubles as
Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Garcia de Orta) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) won over Emily Orlove and Carolina Velazquez, 6-1.
The Flyers and the Saints split the singles matches that were played. Pedroso beat Suarez in straight sets to start things off, 6-2, 6-0. In No. 2 singles, Smith defeated Cupper, 6-3, 6-1. Vujanic managed to defeat Velazquez in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Reisch was edged by Orlove in No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-4, giving Maryville their first singles match win of the day.
The Saints beat the Flyers in the last two singles matches that were played as Dowden defeated Sueflohn in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Davis dropped her match against Gouveia 7-5, 6-3, in No. 6 singles.
Lewis plays Southern Indiana next Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Evansville, Ind.
