GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team dominated the final 25 minutes of action in its 18-10 win at Davenport on Wednesday (April 21) afternoon at Davenport's Turf Field in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Flyers improve to 4-7 overall and in the GLVC while the Panthers drop to 1-8 overall and in the conference.
Lewis dominated the stat sheet in the first 15 minutes of play outshooting Davenport 13-2 and forced 10 turnovers but only led 2-1 at the end of the opening quarter.
Hunter Loprino (Woodstock, Ill./St. Viator) and
Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) scored the first two goals of the game for the Flyers, but the Panthers got a goal from Connor Foster with 0:06 left in the frame to cut Lewis' lead in half.
The Flyers scored three of the first four goals of the second stanza to extend its lead to 5-2 as
Thomas Purfeerst (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) accounted for two of those goals while Xan Broulliet added the third. Davenport got back-to-back goals from Stephen Ochsenkehl and Austin Thompson to cut the lead to 5-4. Purfeerst added his third goal of the quarter to extend Lewis' lead to 6-4.
The Panthers scored the final three goals of the quarter to take a 7-6 lead at halftime.
The Flyers tied the game 1:03 into the third quarter as
Keith Parkman II (San Diego, Calif./Serra) scored his eighth goal of the season. Davenport regained the lead scoring twice in the span of 1:55 to take its largest lead of the game at 9-7.
Lewis responded scoring three goals in the span of 5:26 to regain its lead. Parkman II scored his second of the contest,
Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) added the tying goal and Purfeerst scored his fourth of the game to give the Flyers a 10-9 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Lewis wasn't done as it scored the first five goals of the final stanza to extend its lead to 15-9. The Panthers made it 15-10 after a goal by Jordan Caskenette but wouldn't get any closer as the Flyers scored the final three goals of the game to secure the victory.
Eight different Lewis players scored in the contest with Purfeerst leading the way with four goals. Parkman II added three goals while Andre, Loprino, Brouillet, Dalep and
Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had two goals each.
Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) stopped six shots in goal while
Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) made three saves. Rathe got the win to improve to 2-0.
Brouillet won 22-of-29 faceoffs and scooped up 12 ground balls in the contest.
Ochsenkehl led Davenport with three goals while Caskenette and Adam Smellie had two goals apiece.
The Flyers play their final game of the 2021 season next Saturday (May 1) hosting Maryville at 2 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
