ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team picked up its second straight win defeating Maryville 12-3 on Saturday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers improve to 17-14, 15-12 GLVC while the Saints drop to 13-18, 11-12 GLVC.
Lewis sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning scoring five runs on five hits.
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) led off the game with a solo home run to right field.
Michael O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on
Kevin Barry's (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) single up the middle.
A walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases for
Max Warren (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville). Warren hit a fly ball to right that was initially caught by Jackson Burrell, but Burrell crashed into the fence causing him to drop the ball which allowed all three runners to score. Warren was thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple to end the inning.
The Flyers added to its lead in the third inning. With one out,
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) doubled down the right field line. After a walk and a strikeout,
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) hit a ball into the 34 hole which Nick Hoffman made a diving stop on it but couldn't throw Alt out at first. Rios was hustling on the play and scored from second without a throw.
Maryville cut Lewis' lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning. Elias Stevens reached on an error by O'Brien to lead off the inning and scored on Joey Polak's two-run homer to left field.
The Flyers got one of those runs back in the sixth inning. With one out,
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) walked and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt. O'Brien drove Cavalieri in with a double down the left field line.
Polak hit his second home run of the game with two outs in the seventh on a solo shot to center.
Lewis added some insurance in its half of the seventh scoring five runs on five hits and an error. Warren drove in two runs with a single to left bringing home Rios and
Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). Cavalieri walked with the bases loaded to drive in Warren. O'Brien hit a sac fly to right center scoring Alt and Barry capped the scoring with a single to right center to bring home Everett.
The Flyers rapped out 15 hits in the contest and were led by Rios, Warren and Alt with three hits each. Barry added two hits. Warren drove in a career-high five runs while O'Brien and Barry drove in two runs apiece.
Jonathon Hanscom (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) picked up the win allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched to improve to 3-3 on the season.
Jake Lotz (Palos Hills, Ill./St. Laurence) pitched 1.1 innings striking out three of the four hitters he faced, and
Tyler Talbot (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) pitched a perfect ninth.
Lewis and Maryville conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game beginning at noon at Brennan Field.
