SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Lewis' men's soccer team defeated Drury, 3-0, to notch their fifth straight win on Saturday afternoon at Harrison Stadium in Springfield, Mo. The Flyers improve to 6-4-1 while the Panthers dropped to 6-5.
Both teams had equal opportunities early in first half, matching each other shot for shot following consecutive attempts by
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) and Jaime O'Brien.
The Flyers had back-to-back attempts by Mwanga and
Noah Wolff (Stockholm, Sweden/IFK Lidingö), but both were turned away by the Panthers defense. In the 35th minute, Lewis managed to gain the upper hand as they converted on a freekick taken by Mwanga.
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) got things going for the Flyers in the second half as he netted his team leading fourth goal of the season with an assist from
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North). Mitchell Vaughn tried to answer back to put the Panthers on the board, but his attempt soared high left.
In the 70th minute,
Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township) scored in the lower left corner coming from an assist from
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling), extending the Lewis lead. Drury managed to challenge
Will Maurice (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) three more times before the end of the match but were unsuccessful.
The Flyers outshot the Panthers, 14-7, recording six of those on target. Mwanga led Lewis with six attempts, followed by Baumann with three. Maurice tallied one save in his third straight shutout.
Lewis returns to the pitch on Friday, April 9, hosting Missouri S&T at 5:30 p.m., at Lewis Stadium.
