KENOSHA, Wis. – Lewis University's softball team used a pair of seventh inning rallies to sweep Parkside in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Case Softball Complex in Kenosha, Wis. The Flyers improve to 15-10 while the Rangers drop to 7-14.
Game 1 – Lewis 8, Parkside 6
In the opener on Tuesday, Lewis jumped out to an early lead with a two-out rally in the top of the first.
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) singled through the left side of the infield and came around to score on
Katie David's (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) single to right and an error by the right fielder.
Parkside took the lead in the second as Maegan Brookins doubled off the fence in left center with the bases loaded to drive in three runs. The Rangers added to their lead in the third as Alyssa Laxson singled up the middle to drive in Megan Aliverti to make it 4-1.
Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) hit a solo home run to left center in the fourth to cut Parkside's lead in half at 4-2.
The Rangers added single runs in the fourth and fifth to extend their lead to 6-2.
Magaldi hit a two-run home run to left center in the sixth to drive in
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) to make it 6-4. Later in the inning,
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) singled down the right field line to drive in
Ella Jacobson (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) to make it 6-5.
Gabi Nilles (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) tried to score on the play from second but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Flyers regained the lead in the seventh as Kavalauskas walked to lead off the frame and went to second on David's single up the middle. Both runs scored when Serena reached on an error by the first baseman and the right fielder as Serena ended up at third on the play. Magaldi drove in Serena with a groundout to short for a big insurance run.
David, pitching in relief, set down the Rangers in order in the seventh to pick up her seventh win of the season.
Lewis had 11 hits in the opener and was led by Lofthouse, David and Magaldi with two apiece.
Game 2 – Lewis 4, Parkside 2
The Flyers once again jumped out to an early lead as
Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) drove in Magaldi with a single up the middle in the second inning.
Parkside tied the game in the third on Dani Evans' home run to left field. Evans put the Rangers in front in the fifth with a single to center field scoring Allison Hausl with an unearned run.
Lewis regained the lead in the seventh.
Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) led off the inning with a double off the fence in left and scored on Nilles triple down the left field line to tie the game. Lofthouse followed with a bunt single back to the circle to score Nilles with the go-ahead run. After another single and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with no one out,
Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) hit into a 4-3 double play that scored Lofthouse from third.
Anna Gustafson (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) retired the first two batters in the seventh but allowed a single and a walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. David came on to relieve Gustafson and got Evans to hit a soft line drive to
Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic) on the first pitch of the at-bat to end the game.
The Flyers outhit Parkside 9-4 in the nightcap with Kavalauskas recording three of those hits. Gustafson picked up the win to even her record at 2-2 allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. David notched her fourth save of the season.
Lewis is back on the road this weekend as it heads to Quincy, Ill., on Saturday afternoon to take on the Hawks in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
