ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lewis' baseball season came to a close Saturday afternoon as UIndy eliminated the Flyers from the Great Lakes Valley Conference by the score of 7-1 at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
The Greyhounds (23-20) struck first with three runs on one hit in the top of the first. Jonathan Hanscom hit Trey Smith to lead off the game and then walked Alex Vela. Hanscom threw Smith out at third on a sacrifice attempt for the first out of the inning and then struck out Will Smithey for the second out. John Carpinelli hit a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right for a three-run homer.
The Flyers had chances in each of the first three innings but left four runners on base and were 0-4 with runners in scoring position.
UIndy extended its lead in the fifth with a pair of unearned runs. Brandon Dewitt drove in the first run with a single down the right field line and later in the inning Carpinelli hit a sacrifice fly to center with the bases loaded.
The Hounds tacked on single suns in the sixth and seventh innings.
Lewis had a chance in the sixth inning to cut into the lead loading the bases with two out but a groundout to first ended the threat.
Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) got the Flyers on the board in the seventh leading off the inning with a home run to left on a 2-2 pitch.
Lewis was held to six hits in the contest – a first inning single by
Michael O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), a third inning double by
Max Warren (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) and a sixth inning single by
Jackson Dvorak (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic), Cantelo's home run and
Anthony Cavalieri's (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) single in the seventh and
Kevin Barry's (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) single in the eighth.
Hanscom, one of three pitchers employed by the Flyers in the game, was charged with the loss.
Lewis finishes its season with a record of 24-18 and was 18-14 in the GLVC's Blue Division.
