ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four with a 4-1 win over Lindenwood in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both squads on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 3-0-1, 1-0 GLVC while the Lions drop to 0-2, 0-1 GLVC.
Lewis jumped on top in the 10th minute converting on a free kick from the edge of the penalty area after a Lindenwood foul.
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) took the free kick from the left side and served it across the box to
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) on the back post who was able to head it into the open goal for his team leading fourth of the season.
The Flyers added to their lead in the 21st minute. Beaulieu brought the ball down the right side and crossed it across the box to
Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township) who shot it towards an open goal. The Lions Gabriel Herrera tried to clear the ball of the line but the officials ruled the ball crossed the goal line before Herrera could clear it to give Iniguez his firs goal of the season.
Lindenwood had a 4-3 advantage in shots in the first half but Lewis was opportunistic with their chances as both of their shots on goal found the back of the net. The Lions also had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Lions scored 1:35 into the second half to cut Lewis' lead in half. After a foul on the Flyers, Herrera served a free kick into the box and
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) came off his line but he didn't catch it cleanly and it bounced to Santiago Rodriguez who shot it in.
The Flyers got that goal back in the 62nd minute on
Arturs Gorodnickis' (Riga, Latvia/Riga) first goal of the season. Beaulieu crossed a ball into the middle of the box and Gorodnickis was able to redirect it in with a header.
Lewis sealed the win 10 minutes later as Iniquez intercepted a pass near midfield and played it ahead to
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) who got behind the defense and scored for his first goal of the season.
The Flyers finished the contest with a 9-8 edge in shots and 7-2 in shots on goal. Lindenwood had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Iniguez and
Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) had two shots on goal apiece while Doppelhofer made one save in goal to move to 2-0-1 on the season.
Lewis continues its five-game homestand on Friday (Sept. 17) hosting McKendree at 7:30 p.m.
