ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference action shutting out Lindenwood 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium to begin the season with three straight wins for the first time since 2013. The Flyers improve to 3-0, 1-0 GLVC while the Lions drop to 0-3, 0-1 GLVC.
The game was scoreless at halftime but Lindenwood held 61 percent of the possession and had seven corner kicks to none for Lewis. The Flyers had the games first scoring chance as
Faith Lewis (Corunna, Ind./DeKalb) fired a shot from the left wing that was saved by Sam Blazek.
Lewis had a couple of other chances but missed them wide.
The Lions had five shots in the first half as well but its only shot on goal came in the 23rd minute off a rebound of a blocked shot by Emily Burton that was saved by
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England).
The Flyers had a couple of chances in the 61
st minute as
Alex Dennis (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) fired a shot from the edge of the penalty area that was saved by Blazek and the rebound bounced to
Elisa Aguilar (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) whose shot was also saved by Blazek.
Lindenwood had a chance 10 minutes later but Morgan Weller's shot was saved by Clark.
The Flyers broke the scoreless deadlock with 10:19 left in the contest. The Lions tried to clear the ball but Aguilar intercepted the pass and played it ahead to
Faith Lewis (Corunna, Ind./DeKalb) who dribbled down the left side and fired a shot towards goal that deflected off of Blazek's hands and into the goal for her first goal as a Flyer.
Linenwood had one final chance with two minutes remaining as Mia Corrigan tried to tie the game but Clark was there to make the stop.
Lewis finished the contest outshooting the Lions 11-10 and 7-3 in shots on goal. Lindenwood had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks and was whistled for 13 fouls compared to nine for Lewis.
Dennis and Lewis each had two shots on goal for the Flyers while Clark made three saves in goal to record her first shutout of the season.
Lewis continues its homestand on Friday hosting McKendree at 5 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
