Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team finished out its three-match home stand with a 1-0 win against Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers are now 4-0-1, 2-0-1 GLVC while the Tritons fall 3-3-0, 1-2-0 GLVC.
With the win, Lewis matches its best start to a season since 2013 when they also started 4-0-1.
Though the match was hard fought neither side was able to score during the first 45 minutes of the contest. The Tritons had a breakaway attempt, nearly scoring but it was broken up by
Melisa Hadzic (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) who raced back to prevent a crossing pass. During the first half there were two shots attempted by the UMSL and one shot for the Flyers.
The second half started out slow until the 51st minute where the Tritons took a shot on goal that went out left. The Flyers returned the attempt during the 57th minute when
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) attempted Lewis' first shot on goal during the second half, but it would be saved by the Tritons.
Two more Triton attempts to score came in the 64th and 72nd minute of the match but neither were able to make it in the net.
As the match approached the final 10 minutes a foul occurred allowing Havelka-Vanderplow to take a free kick toward goal. Her attempt was deflected off the crossbar by the UMSL keeper and out for a Flyer corner kick. Havelka-Vanderplow took the corner kick and sent a low line drive towards goal that was knocked in by a Triton defender for an own goal which allowed Lewis to take the lead.
The Flyers took three shots in total during the match while the Tritons took five.
Havelka-Vanderplow led the Flyers with three shots in the contest and had two on goal.
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) made one save in the match.
The Flyers travel to Indianapolis this Friday (Sept. 24) to take on the Greyhounds at 4 p.m. (CDT).
