ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Melisa Hadzic's (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) first career collegiate goal came at an opportune time as she scored 3:21 into overtime to lift Lewis' women's soccer team to a season opening 2-1 win over Tiffin on Thursday evening at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers filled up the stat sheet outshooting the Dragons 21-5 and had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
Lewis wasted little time getting on the board as
Miranda Nirchi (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) played a ball from the other side of midfield ahead to
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) who got behind the defense and beat the keeper into the upper center of the goal from just inside the penalty area in the fourth minute.
The Flyers had three chances to extend their lead but were turned away by goalkeeper Molly Miller.
Lewis finished the first half with a 10-1 advantage in shots and 4-0 in shots on goal.
The Dragons evened the score 12:12 into the second half when Kristen Dickison capitalized on a failed clear attempt from the Flyer defense and scored from just inside the box into the upper right corner over the outstretched hand of
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England).
The Flyers had several opportunities to retake the lead but once again were unable to solve Miller as she made five saves in the second half.
Tiffin had the first crack at the game-winner less than three minutes into overtime. Tatum Bradley dribbled into the box but her shot sailed over the bar for a goal kick.
Lewis would score the game-winner just 34 seconds later. Hadzic intercepted a pass back to Miller and she blasted it into the lower right corner.
The Flyers hit the road on Saturday as they travel to Dowling Park in Hammond, Ind., to take on Purdue Northwest at 12 p.m.
