Fast Start Propels Lewis Women’s Soccer To 3-2 Win At Purdue Northwest

The win was the 100th career victory for head coach Chris Koenig.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team couldn't have asked for a better start in its 3-2 win at Purdue Northwest scoring three goals in the first 25-plus minutes at Pepsi Field in Hammond, Ind. The Flyers move to 2-0 on the season while PNW drops to 0-1-1. The win was the 100th career victory for head coach Chris Koenig.

Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) continued her hot start to the season scoring in the ninth minute off an assist from Cameron Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) for her second goal in as many as games.

The Pride got the equalizer 4:28 later on a goal from Baylee Byford with an assist from Braidy Ceh.

Lewis regained the lead with back-to-back goals in the span of 2:04. Sengstock scored her first of the season with an assist from Alex Dennis (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) and then Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) scored what proved to be the game winner at the 25:02 mark with an assist from Havelka-Vanderplow.

Purdue Northwest cut the Flyer lead to 3-2 with 15:03 remaining in the opening frame as Lauryn Tillman scored an unassisted goal.

Lewis held an 8-7 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes including 5-3 in shots on goal.

Neither side was able to score in the second though both had their chances as the Flyers had six shots with three being on goal while the Pride had three chances with one on target.

Lewis finished the contest with advantages in shots 14-10, shots on goal 8-4 and corner kicks 12-5.

The Flyers are back at home on Sunday (Sept. 12) as they host Lindenwood in the GLVC opener for both squads at 12 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
